Roots in Chicago. Birth in New York. Death in Los Angeles. Beautiful music and ugly noise. Audio graffiti on the walls of convention. As analog was dying, Crisis maintained a very human sound. Their tortured sludge belied an industrial foundation. Truly artistic and exploratory, the band was a microcosm of the cold, hard New York City streets that spawned them. Elements of nature vs. man’s concrete jungle. Man vs. man in a cage match. Documentarians of this primal struggle through art and music. Observers and teachers. Unsung heroes. Forever underground.

HELLOWEEN - PUMPKIN IRON
Let’s face it, Helloween was on the road to ruin after Kai Hansen left the band in 1989. As much as Andi Deris had big shoes to fill when replacing Michael Kiske in 1993, he is largely responsible for bringing the band back from the dead – even if it was in fits and starts. Although Helloween has been inconsistent, they have been prolific and Andi Deris’s range of delivery has allowed the band to stretch out into all aspects of power metal. They have gone from pioneers to explorers. If there is one thing that ties all Helloween lineups together, it is that they have always tested boundaries. This is their legacy. In the latter half of their career, highlights include material that is fast, heavy and dark without losing a sense of melody. This is where the band arrived under the leadership of Andi Deris and this is the focus of ‘Pumpkin Iron.’

EDGE OF SANITY - SUSPENDEAD
After 20 years we still worship Swedish death metal. We revere the seminal releases and uncover the second tier demos for reissue. We witness a slew of retro bands paying homage and others that mix the classic sound with hardcore, sludge and blackened crust. In this spirit, Edge of Sanity’s origins should be unearthed and celebrated. Discussion of Edge of Sanity often turns to masterworks like ‘Crimson’ and ‘Purgatory Afterglow’. The band advanced rapidly and their pure death metal beginnings gave way to progressive and varied sounds including a focus on melody and clean vocals. But how about refocusing on Edge of Sanity’s early sound? ‘Suspendead’ picks at the well-preserved remains of this era. Fortunately, many of the earlier tracks have been remixed and remastered by legendary frontman and recording guru Dan Swanö. Edge of Sanity’s classic Swedeath proves timeless as if suspended like a zombie cryogenically preserved to live dead again. The cover borrowed from Dan Seagrave’s collection compliments the theme. You can't live forever, but can you be dead forever?

GAS GIANT - GREETINGS FROM DEEP SPACE
Lost in space, but not forgotten, Denmark’s Gas Giant created incredible psychedelic jams until they simply disappeared. We can only hope they are lost in the space-time continuum and a wormhole will bring them home. In the meantime, our equipment is picking up a distant signal which we are making available to you as ‘Greetings from Deep Space’.

ÅKERFELDT WILSON SYNERGY
In early 2011, Steven Wilson recorded ‘Grace for Drowning’. Around the same time, Michael Åkerfeldt’s Opeth recorded ‘Heritage’ with engineering and mixing assistance from Wilson. Shortly thereafter, the two collaborated on a project called ‘Storm Corrosion’. Says Wilson of Storm Corrosion, "If you'd asked me three months ago about the music, I would have said, 'Expect the last thing you would expect.' But actually, now that ‘Heritage’ and ‘Grace for Drowning’ have come out, I don't think it's going to be that much of a shock to people, because it's almost like a third part of the trilogy, in a way. If anything, it's even more orchestral, even more stripped down, even more dark, twisted and melancholic . . . but it certainly feels like it comes from the same place as ‘Heritage’ and ‘Grace for Drowning’, which indeed it does because it was written during the same period.” ‘Åkerfeldt Wilson Synergy’ pulls material from all three albums and reconfigures it to harness the full spectrum of these related projects creating a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

PARADISE LOST – TRAGEDY UNITED
This Barking Chicken Production was inspired by Decibel’s review of Paradise Lost’s latest LP ‘Tragic Idol.’ Scribe Chris Dick nailed it when he suggested that the album lacks "that mandatory full-length rules-all feel." I agree. Since this site is dedicated to the album-as-art concept, I took on the challenge of trying to re-sequence the material in an effort to build a more cohesive record. After further thought, I decided against limiting it to ‘Tragic Idol,’ but to drop the material that doesn’t fit as tightly and include select material from its stylistic forerunner, ‘Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us.’ The strengths of these albums combined anew make for a mind-blowing front to back listen.
