OVERKILL - KILLEKTION

OverKill was one of the first thrash bands, combining punk with traditional metal before the term was even coined. Formed in 1980 in New Jersey, the band has released 16 studio albums and kept up a rigorous touring schedule over the past 30 years. OverKill’s mascot, Chaly, is a winged skull who has appeared on most of their album covers. Along with Chaly, vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni are the sole remaining founding members. Through many lineup changes OverKill has stayed true to their original sound, bucking all trends without relenting and without compromise. This Barking Chicken Production is a trip down memory lane, or a flashback to the gutter as the case may be.

It is amazing that all these classic thrash acts are still releasing some of the most vital extreme music on this twisted planet. They are the zombies of the metal world and they are relentless. All of the tracks here were released in 2009 or 2010. Old thrashers never die . . . they just circle the pit!

DEATH ANGEL - RESURRECTION MACHINE

In 1987, a bunch of teenagers dubbed Death Angel burst out of the Bay Area thrash scene with ‘The Ultra-Violence’. Although their legendary status largely stems from their debut, they continued to mature, developing their sound on ‘Frolic Through The Park’ and finding it on ‘Act III’. Then things went awry. Heavy Metal in general, and especially Thrash, were knocked down by the one-two punch of Metallica’s sellout and Nirvana’s ascendance to the pulpit of teen angst. At about the same time, vocalist Mark Osegueda left the band. Otherwise, the lineup remained intact, and, led by guitarist Rob Cavestany, they changed their name to The Organization and produced two more albums in the style of ‘Act III’. A few years after this fizzled out, key Death Angel personnel Cavestany and Osegueda joined forces as Swarm. This reunion paved the way for the eventual reclaiming of the Death Angel moniker for 2004’s ‘The Art of Dying’. So, as the years went by, bands like OverKill, Megadeth and Anthrax marched forward with their brand despite losing important members. Meanwhile, the band formerly known as Death Angel toiled away largely intact, but failed to capitalize and build on their legendary status. This Barking Chicken Production rights that wrong and resurrects tracks released as The Organization and Swarm to take their rightful place alongside select Death Angel material. Perhaps having learned a lesson themselves, the band is not repeating past mistakes. There are less original members in the current incarnation of Death Angel than there were in The Organization or Swarm or at any other time in Death Angel’s history. Why not change the name again? Because that would be stupid.

VOIVOD - POLARIZED

Canada's Voivod is one of the most unique metal bands in the multiverse. The band's science fiction themes are complimented by Piggy's bizarre riffs and Away’s twisted artwork. After a string of groundbreaking albums that evolved from thrash to progressive metal, Voivod lost Blacky and then Snake. Then after two albums as a three-piece with Eric Forrest on bass and vocals, all went dark in the Voivod camp. Years later, when plans were made to reunite with Snake and launch Voivod Mark III with Jason Newsted on bass, expectations were high. Unfortunately, the three albums produced by this lineup -- Voivod (2003), Katorz (2006) and Infini (2009) -- failed to live up to expectations. This is partly due to the fact that Piggy tragically died from cancer before the completion of ‘Katorz’. Considering that the last two releases were put together from recordings that Piggy made before he died, these albums amount to little more than demos of what might have been. ‘Polarized’ is an attempt to weed through these demos to compile a final Voivod album that is true to the sound and style of the classics. R.I.P. Piggy.

RAGE - ILLUMINATION

Rage has been consistently creating ass kicking powerthrash since they arrived on the scene as Avenger in 1984. Shortly after their debut, they changed their name to Rage and have been a staple of the European metal diet ever since. Although they are virtually unknown in the U.S., they have amassed 19 albums and 7 EPs over the last 25 years. This Barking Chicken Production shines a light on the most memorable moments.
