MOE. - BUSTER (THREE DIFFERENT ONES)
Buster is a Barking Chicken favorite because it launches from the nexus of jam band, progressive and psychedelic rock. This is a good example of how moe. can build out in different directions from a solid foundation. Buster would be the first to tell you that the sky is the limit. No wonder flying pigs and barking chickens stick together.

CLUTCH - CHICKEN FRIED RABBOT
Formed in 1991 in Germantown, Maryland singer Neil Fallon, guitarist Tim Sult, bassist Dan Maines and drummer Jean Paul “JP” Gaster took the name of Clutch to represent their stoned-out funk. They hustled up a mid-sized van and started playing shows up and down the eastern seaboard. Granted their sound was still developing. Some nights it was more of a Zeppelin/Sabbath mix, other nights it was more hardcore with a Faith No More vibe. Their persistence was matched by their determination and the crowds started to build. As the years went on, the sound evolved into a unique combination of fuzzy hard rock and heavy blues. This Barking Chicken Production focuses on the albums “Blast Tyrant” (2004), “Robot Hive/Exodus” (2005) and “From Beale Street to Oblivion” (2007). This era saw an expansion of sound including the liberal use of keyboards and even the addition of keyboardist Mick Schauer from 2005–2008.

SOULLESS - CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOULLESS
It's like homemade chicken soup that warms the chill and heals the ill. This collection of songs is based on the belief that tales of horror and anguish can nourish us to the bone and heal the cynicism in our hearts. Flavored with a heavy dose of thrash and melodic death metal, most every riff seeps in deeply. It's hard not to bang your head violently, feeling thrilled to have been touched by this special brand of darkness. Punishing the ears since 1997, Cleveland’s Soulless are the best band you’re not listening to. Do we have to spoon feed you?

DANIEL DAVIES & KARMA TO BURN - VOX
Daniel Davies is the son of Kinks guitarist Dave Davies. Karma To Burn is noted for being a mostly instrumental band, however K2B’s 2010 album ‘Appalachian Incantation’ included one song with Davies on vocals. In June 2010, Daniel Davies’s Year Long Disaster toured Europe with all three members of Karma To Burn as part of the band. The favor was returned on Karma To Burn's European summer tour with Davies stepping in as an occasional guitarist and vocalist. Karma To Burn then released ‘V’ in 2011 which included a few songs with vocals by Davies, further blurring the boundaries between K2B and Year Long Disaster. This relationship appears to have been short-lived as Davies and Karma To Burn have gone their separate ways. Enjoy the product of this brief affair. Rumor has it that Daniel Davies joined CKY, but the status of that band is unknown.

CRISIS - FUNERAL PARADE
Roots in Chicago. Birth in New York. Death in Los Angeles. Beautiful music and ugly noise. Audio graffiti on the walls of convention. As analog was dying, Crisis maintained a very human sound. Their tortured sludge belied an industrial foundation. Truly artistic and exploratory, the band was a microcosm of the cold, hard New York City streets that spawned them. Elements of nature vs. man’s concrete jungle. Man vs. man in a cage match. Documentarians of this primal struggle through art and music. Observers and teachers. Unsung heroes. Forever underground.

HELLOWEEN - PUMPKIN IRON
Let’s face it, Helloween was on the road to ruin after Kai Hansen left the band in 1989. As much as Andi Deris had big shoes to fill when replacing Michael Kiske in 1993, he is largely responsible for bringing the band back from the dead – even if it was in fits and starts. Although Helloween has been inconsistent, they have been prolific and Andi Deris’s range of delivery has allowed the band to stretch out into all aspects of power metal. They have gone from pioneers to explorers. If there is one thing that ties all Helloween lineups together, it is that they have always tested boundaries. This is their legacy. In the latter half of their career, highlights include material that is fast, heavy and dark without losing a sense of melody. This is where the band arrived under the leadership of Andi Deris and this is the focus of ‘Pumpkin Iron.’

EDGE OF SANITY - SUSPENDEAD
After 20 years we still worship Swedish death metal. We revere the seminal releases and uncover the second tier demos for reissue. We witness a slew of retro bands paying homage and others that mix the classic sound with hardcore, sludge and blackened crust. In this spirit, Edge of Sanity’s origins should be unearthed and celebrated. Discussion of Edge of Sanity often turns to masterworks like ‘Crimson’ and ‘Purgatory Afterglow’. The band advanced rapidly and their pure death metal beginnings gave way to progressive and varied sounds including a focus on melody and clean vocals. But how about refocusing on Edge of Sanity’s early sound? ‘Suspendead’ picks at the well-preserved remains of this era. Fortunately, many of the earlier tracks have been remixed and remastered by legendary frontman and recording guru Dan Swanö. Edge of Sanity’s classic Swedeath proves timeless as if suspended like a zombie cryogenically preserved to live dead again. The cover borrowed from Dan Seagrave’s collection compliments the theme. You can't live forever, but can you be dead forever?

Ã…KERFELDT WILSON SYNERGY
In early 2011, Steven Wilson recorded ‘Grace for Drowning’. Around the same time, Michael Ã…kerfeldt’s Opeth recorded ‘Heritage’ with engineering and mixing assistance from Wilson. Shortly thereafter, the two collaborated on a project called ‘Storm Corrosion’. Says Wilson of Storm Corrosion, "If you'd asked me three months ago about the music, I would have said, 'Expect the last thing you would expect.' But actually, now that ‘Heritage’ and ‘Grace for Drowning’ have come out, I don't think it's going to be that much of a shock to people, because it's almost like a third part of the trilogy, in a way. If anything, it's even more orchestral, even more stripped down, even more dark, twisted and melancholic . . . but it certainly feels like it comes from the same place as ‘Heritage’ and ‘Grace for Drowning’, which indeed it does because it was written during the same period.” ‘Ã…kerfeldt Wilson Synergy’ pulls material from all three albums and reconfigures it to harness the full spectrum of these related projects creating a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

PARADISE LOST – TRAGEDY UNITED
This Barking Chicken Production was inspired by Decibel’s review of Paradise Lost’s latest LP ‘Tragic Idol.’ Scribe Chris Dick nailed it when he suggested that the album lacks "that mandatory full-length rules-all feel." I agree. Since this site is dedicated to the album-as-art concept, I took on the challenge of trying to re-sequence the material in an effort to build a more cohesive record. After further thought, I decided against limiting it to ‘Tragic Idol,’ but to drop the material that doesn’t fit as tightly and include select material from its stylistic forerunner, ‘Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us.’ The strengths of these albums combined anew make for a mind-blowing front to back listen.

NAPALM DEATH - GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY GRIND
Napalm Death is among the most influential bands in the history of extreme music. They are credited with inventing and defining the grindcore genre by incorporating elements of hardcore punk and thrash metal with short songs, fast tempos, deep guttural vocals and sociopolitical lyrics. Napalm Death was formed near Birmingham, England in 1981 by Nik Bullen and Miles Ratledge while still in their early teenage years. The duo had been playing in amateur bands since 1980 as an extension of their fanzine writing, and went through a number of names before choosing Napalm Death in mid 1981. The band was initially inspired by the early wave of punk bands, particularly the anarcho-punk movement. The band's debut album 'Scum', released in 1987 by Earache Records, had a huge impact on the global metal community. Over time, the band was influenced by death metal even as they helped shape its future. Interestingly, today's Napalm Death includes no original members. In the early years, a talented cast of characters passed through the band's ranks including Justin Broadrick (Godflesh), Bill Steer (Carcass) and Lee Dorrian (Cathedral). As seen in the chart below, the reach of the band's family tree is rivaled only by its influence. While the founding members are all long gone, the lineup of vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway, bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris and drummer Danny Herrera has remained consistent since 1991. Relentlessly they grind it out.Get it here:

OVERKILL - KILLEKTION
OverKill was one of the first thrash bands, combining punk with traditional metal before the term was even coined. Formed in 1980 in New Jersey, the band has released 16 studio albums and kept up a rigorous touring schedule over the past 30 years. OverKill’s mascot, Chaly, is a winged skull who has appeared on most of their album covers. Along with Chaly, vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni are the sole remaining founding members. Through many lineup changes OverKill has stayed true to their original sound, bucking all trends without relenting and without compromise. This Barking Chicken Production is a trip down memory lane, or a flashback to the gutter as the case may be.Get it here:
