HELLOWEEN - PUMPKIN IRON

Let’s face it, Helloween was on the road to ruin after Kai Hansen left the band in 1989. As much as Andi Deris had big shoes to fill when replacing Michael Kiske in 1993, he is largely responsible for bringing the band back from the dead – even if it was in fits and starts. Although Helloween has been inconsistent, they have been prolific and Andi Deris’s range of delivery has allowed the band to stretch out into all aspects of power metal. They have gone from pioneers to explorers. If there is one thing that ties all Helloween lineups together, it is that they have always tested boundaries. This is their legacy. In the latter half of their career, highlights include material that is fast, heavy and dark without losing a sense of melody. This is where the band arrived under the leadership of Andi Deris and this is the focus of ‘Pumpkin Iron.’

NAPALM DEATH - GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY GRIND

Napalm Death is among the most influential bands in the history of extreme music. They are credited with inventing and defining the grindcore genre by incorporating elements of hardcore punk and thrash metal with short songs, fast tempos, deep guttural vocals and sociopolitical lyrics. Napalm Death was formed near Birmingham, England in 1981 by Nik Bullen and Miles Ratledge while still in their early teenage years. The duo had been playing in amateur bands since 1980 as an extension of their fanzine writing, and went through a number of names before choosing Napalm Death in mid 1981. The band was initially inspired by the early wave of punk bands, particularly the anarcho-punk movement. The band's debut album 'Scum', released in 1987 by Earache Records, had a huge impact on the global metal community. Over time, the band was influenced by death metal even as they helped shape its future. Interestingly, today's Napalm Death includes no original members. In the early years, a talented cast of characters passed through the band's ranks including Justin Broadrick (Godflesh), Bill Steer (Carcass) and Lee Dorrian (Cathedral). As seen in the chart below, the reach of the band's family tree is rivaled only by its influence. While the founding members are all long gone, the lineup of vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway, bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris and drummer Danny Herrera has remained consistent since 1991. Relentlessly they grind it out.

SOUNDGARDEN - TOY BOX

Soundgarden's early Stooges/MC5-meets-Zeppelin/Sabbath sound is a dark, murky, buzzing cauldron of noise that simultaneously redirects and pays tribute to heavy metal. The best moments are startling fusions of classic metal, punk rock, and psychedelia of the fuzz guitar variety, plus the local flavor of Green River and the Melvins. The difference was, Soundgarden were better songwriters than their peers and were able to maintain order right up to the edge of chaos. Their feel for memorable riffs and hooks lends greater power to both the rockers and the creepy, dirge-like slow numbers. When separated out from the filler, the numerous highlights show why Soundgarden had such an enormous impact on the development of grunge and stoner rock.

DECEASED - KILL FOR THE DEAD

Criminally underrated, Deceased was spawned during metal’s rapid evolution from NWOBHM to death metal during the 1980’s. Using only the purest ingredients, Deceased has distilled traditional metal and punk into a thrashing death metal concoction that is unique yet familiar. A loyalty to classic twin guitar heroics is coupled with intense dedication to primitive extremity. The delivery is Lovecraftian insanity as tales of horror unfold. All of this is wrapped up in a package so true to metal that drummer and vocalist King Fowley rusts when it rains. ‘Kill For The Dead’ focuses on studio material released between 1997 and 2011.

DEATH ANGEL - RESURRECTION MACHINE

In 1987, a bunch of teenagers dubbed Death Angel burst out of the Bay Area thrash scene with ‘The Ultra-Violence’. Although their legendary status largely stems from their debut, they continued to mature, developing their sound on ‘Frolic Through The Park’ and finding it on ‘Act III’. Then things went awry. Heavy Metal in general, and especially Thrash, were knocked down by the one-two punch of Metallica’s sellout and Nirvana’s ascendance to the pulpit of teen angst. At about the same time, vocalist Mark Osegueda left the band. Otherwise, the lineup remained intact, and, led by guitarist Rob Cavestany, they changed their name to The Organization and produced two more albums in the style of ‘Act III’. A few years after this fizzled out, key Death Angel personnel Cavestany and Osegueda joined forces as Swarm. This reunion paved the way for the eventual reclaiming of the Death Angel moniker for 2004’s ‘The Art of Dying’. So, as the years went by, bands like OverKill, Megadeth and Anthrax marched forward with their brand despite losing important members. Meanwhile, the band formerly known as Death Angel toiled away largely intact, but failed to capitalize and build on their legendary status. This Barking Chicken Production rights that wrong and resurrects tracks released as The Organization and Swarm to take their rightful place alongside select Death Angel material. Perhaps having learned a lesson themselves, the band is not repeating past mistakes. There are less original members in the current incarnation of Death Angel than there were in The Organization or Swarm or at any other time in Death Angel’s history. Why not change the name again? Because that would be stupid.

RAGE - ILLUMINATION

Rage has been consistently creating ass kicking powerthrash since they arrived on the scene as Avenger in 1984. Shortly after their debut, they changed their name to Rage and have been a staple of the European metal diet ever since. Although they are virtually unknown in the U.S., they have amassed 19 albums and 7 EPs over the last 25 years. This Barking Chicken Production shines a light on the most memorable moments.
